Dutch disease is a situation when foreign demand for an export drives up the exchange rate of the country, making the rest of the country's product less competitive. During 1970, when natural gas deposits was discovered in Netherland, the increase in the exchange rate caused the manufacturing products to be less competitive.

Malaysia has long enjoyed the advantage of petroleum exploration. However, over-reliance by the government on the revenue from petroleum exploration has made the country's manufacturing sector complacent. Hicom, Proton and numerous other large government projects has received bailout from Petronas during Asian financial crisis.

Petroleum, although a valuable resource, had created hurdles for Malaysia to achieve economic excellence, instead of helping economic growth.

Individual Integrity

Profit reported is a representation by the management that they believe hand on heart that this is what the company will achieve for the benefit for the shareholders collectively. However, too often, that these reprentation has been followed with series of adjustments or later on provisions to the profit that they represented and was rewarded for.

Too some extent, this is the result of dilution of individual integrity in company management. Such integrity cannot be substituted by government regulation, what Obama is propogating or corporate governance.

Integrity needs to be the first and upmost criteria when it comes to management selection. When company you invest in changes management or MD, please make sure to ask the question, " Mr MD, have you been honest in all your dealings so far?"

Irrelevant

MCA is irrelevant.

It is irrelevant because it has not done any good for the Chinese community, or extending beyond that, the citizen of Malaysia. Much like their sister party MIC, MCA is now, more than ever, fested with corruption and in-fighting. Its leadership too occupied with internal conflicts to do any meaningful contribution to the Chinese society.

As far as my memory could look back, I cannot recall any fond memories I have with MCA, beside the effort of Michael Chong. I could remember the misappropriation of the Kojadi funds, I could remember the internal conflicts of all the leaders going back to Tan Khoon Suan, and the countless back to back corruption charges that is tagged with his name.

Both Chairman and Vice Chairman should step down and accept the result of the EGM. MCA will only further erode under their misguided 'leadership' and will eventually become irrelevant.

The party is no longer worthy of your time or support. Its time for the Chinese community to move on.

最近读Alan Greenspan的书，获知JPMorgan原来是一个十九世纪的银行家，当时金融业的风云人物，对国家社会（如，美国铁路，US Steel铁厂， GE）的发展有莫大的贡献。

今天的银行家大多都以谋利当前，个个都想尽快发达，对社会是没什么贡献。虽然，国际金融风暴把许多丑陋的一面都揭开，但凭没有任何的改变。银行的首要执行员还是依旧，马照跑，舞照跳。经济全球化，贸易开放，把人们的脑袋都在想赚钱。社会公益，道德都被抛于脑后。可悲，可悲。

最近许多政府提倡在金融界多施加管制。从市场经济来说，这是一项double edged sword, 因为它可能为市场，投资者带来恢复信心，可是也可能是金融业的一项绊脚石，为公司增加负担，从而降低生产率和投资者回报。美国经济发展最蓬勃是在市场开放的阶段。这回奥巴马要以管制来复苏经济，只能让时间来证明。

最近，由于公司削减资源，停止福利，引起员工对政策上许多不满。小弟也在许多课题上与上司争论不休，和高层有许多冲突。终觉得公司定下的目标，与实行的政策都不一致。讲一套，做一套，非常恼怒。比如，公司想提高盈利，却没定下明确的方针；想重组运作流程到海外，却保持不到效率水平；计划定下后，一年改三遍搞到公司乌烟瘴气，员工士气低迷，疑云重重，不知去向。

其实，行政对公司是否那么重要。跨国公司都以高薪聘请这些行政人员，除了会裁员，合并，拿钱，到底还会些什么？没有了这班人公司还是否能够运作？

小弟对这般人的期望或要求是否不合理？如大家有高见，请指点指点。

最近有个同事不辛意外离世。公司出动了老鼎，COO，人事部老总，行政总监，连菩提老主都叫齐出席明天葬礼。试问生前有多少个人问候过这同事，真正认识这同事。我真的很想了解，出席葬礼都搞成作show, PR仪式。不知是想证明什么，公司元老关心下属吗？

如果是真的，就应该生前多为公司员工做点事情。不是等人不在了，拆大卖关子。可悲，可悲。

A lot of effort has been done worldwide by various politicians and central bankers, using monetary policy and quantitative easing. However, one strategy may have been overlook, that is regulations. The root cause of the problem is investor confidence. And the best way to restore that is by imposing the right regulations that have not been inplace to deal with the way securitisation been going on for more than a century. Bad loans were made and pass through the credit markets. As a result the investor suffer.

Some would argue that this is too late. But it is never too late to rectify something that has gone wrong. This will ensure that the credit that is coming from securitisation keep coming, but with stronger and better quality credits.

Now, this may be something that the economy has never face before. But in some ways, it resemble the many previous problem that the banking sector had experienced. New laws will need to be made to regulate this activity.

Banks who perform securitisation would need to deposit higher amount of assets with the central bankers. Trustee or Investment manager will also need to fulfill certain prudential requirements.

Philanthropy Foundation

There has been a lot of big givings from philanthropy foundations in recent years. We all should be thankful for that. But I frequent question myself what/how much have these funds achieve, and whether if all monies were appropriately used for its purpose. Due to its lack of detail to the public eye, this could be a mean to other ends, publicity, moral image, tax purpose, money laundering etc. In Australia, these are known as prescribed private funds (PPF). The value of these funds at 2008 were $1.2 billion. There has already been evidence of a number of breaches, including offshore loans to associates of the founder or major donors. Since schoolies, I have heard many big names of Lee/Kwok Foundations and have now worked for two organisations, Macquarie and State Street that pride themselves for philanthropy work. But I am still not convinced...

A Foundation is not only a private philanthropy: it is affected with a public interest and is, in a real sense, a public truct. Exempt from taxation, it enjoys a favoured legistlative status. The grants which it makes are matters of public concern, and public confidence in the foundation as a social instrument must be based on an adequate understanding of its purposes and work. A foundation therefore cannot escape the responsibility, moral if not legal, for giving the public complete information of its activities and finance.

大选过了一个月，在三个反对党的政府当中，（从新闻上看来）雪州PKR的州务大丞为人民的贡献最多，parking，水费都有做事。几经风雨的Perak州政府也开始分发永久地契给人民。

只有我们“小弟"的政党-DAP还在发表许多反对党言论，如，”我有心理准备去坐牢“，”PETRONAS可以帮助建大桥“等言论。似乎还没醒过来。从老爸到孩子都没变，当了多年的反对党，现在掌权，似乎又有IDENTITY CRISIS。

最近重温Finance的课本发觉原来这一门课的基础就是发掘价(price)与值(value)的偏差，用一个低买高卖的原则。价是报价板上的价钱，大众化，是很客观的。值是你分析后的值，很有主管的因素。

要在金融商场出胜，要相信自己的分析，对自己（的分析）有信心，还要把这个看法传播出去。News 的Murdoch, PBL的Packer都如此。当年，Murdoch觉得他报馆的商标品牌值得许多钱，把这些资产都列上财政报表，违反会计的基本规则，受到许多批评。谁知News从一个小小报社，到今天收购Dow Jones。

股民大众却喜欢看报价板，听内幕，而忽劣自己的价值观，往往没什么大成就。所以，从今以后，对事情要有个人看法，而对自己的看法要有信心，有信心后要敢言。

平衡一切的三角形

曾经听说过世界上90%的财富，是属于5%的人。顿时觉得，“哇！世界是多么不公平。“

后来回来思考，才觉得其实这才是天然的平衡。因为这世界很多结构都是平衡在一个三角形里，如，平衡的饮食，动物的数量都如此。世界总不能老虎多过山羊。

所以人类的社会结构，从古埃及到今天的科技社会，在任何一个制度之下，公产，民主，独裁，都一样。平衡并不能达到公平的分配。任何政府，制度，科技都不能改变。

父亲节

九月第一个星期天是澳洲的父亲节。当了父亲两年可以说真正的体会到他的甜酸苦辣。

每天的早上最好6.30起床，泡奶（香香），后涂面包，等william吃（他吃时干快去冲凉)饱后7.45给他唔唔（大便）后，洗屁股，刷牙洗脸，涂油，换尿布，换衣裤，8.30必须准时出门。晚上，如果老婆顾到累了，又要接班，哄他睡觉。每天都是忙不完。最怕的还是他生病！真考体力，耐力和精神。所以单身的朋友也不必太羡慕，幸福的背后是有一个很大的代价的。5年内不用想旅行，进修， not even 午睡。

可是，每天着小瓜都会做出一些莫名逗趣的事情，如，说他的bird bird是妈妈的，说sydney tower高高，在床上玩游戏，躲在被里拌露营。。。。

写到这里不禁想起在家乡年老的爸，心里有一股酸，请原谅孩子的不孝。

It's not every day you get the chance to pick the brain of a man whose real-life rags-to-riches story was turned into a Hollywood movie starring one of America's top actors. But the other day I had the opportunity to spend time with Chris Gardner, subject of the 2006 movie The Pursuit of Happyness, in which Gardner was played by Will Smith.

While attending an unpaid internship program at Dean Witter Reynolds in 1981, Gardner spent a year on the streets with his two-year-old son. They took refuge at night in a church shelter or the bathroom of a BART subway station in Oakland, Calif. Nobody at work knew. Gardner eventually won a position as a stockbroker at Dean Witter. Two years later he left for Bear Stearns BSC), where he became a top earner. In 1987, he founded his own brokerage firm, Gardner Rich,in Chicago. Today, Gardner is a multimillionaire, a motivational speaker, a philanthropist, and an international businessman who is about to launch a private equity fund that will invest solely in South Africa. His partner in the fund? Nelson Mandela. Not bad for a guy who, six years before founding his own brokerage firm, was "fighting, scratching, and crawling my way out of the gutter with a baby on my back."

"Passion is Everything"

Gardner is a magnificent speaker and has an engaging personality -- qualities all business professionals would crave. But what's behind his success? What is the one thing -- the one secret -- that helped him change his life? "It's passion," he told me. "Passion is everything. In fact, you've got to be borderline fanatical about what you do." Gardner says he was fortunate to find something he truly loved, something where he couldn't wait for the sun to rise so he could do it again. His advice to entrepreneurs and those seeking a career change? "Be bold enough to find the one thing that you are passionate about. It might not be what you were trained to do. But be bold enough to do the one thing. Nobody needs to dig it but you."

Gardner wanted to be "world-class at something." For him, that something was being a stockbroker. For you, finding something you are passionate about will make the difference in how engaging you become as a communicator and as a leader. If you love what you do, you'll eagerly share the story behind it with boundless enthusiasm.

Passion is not teachable. As a communications coach, I can help clients craft and deliver a powerful story, but I can't create passion. But it's passion that separates the electrifying presenters from the average ones. I'm absolutely convinced of it. As a former television journalist, I've interviewed thousands of spokespeople and personally coached hundreds of others in my current profession. Donald Trump once said: "Without passion, you have no energy -- and without energy, you have nothing." Your listeners want to be in the presence of someone with energy, a person who greets people with a smile and an abundance of enthusiasm. Passion is not something you necessarily verbalize, but it shows. When Gardner walked into Dean Witter after having slept in a subway station the night before, he only wanted to leave one impression on his co-workers. "All they needed to know is that I would light it up day after day. Passion is not something you have to talk about. People feel it. They see it just as clearly as the color of your eyes, baby."

Coffee and Commitment

I have spent the last several years interviewing inspiring leaders, and I can say without hesitation that passion is the No. 1 quality that sets them apart. In many ways, my talk with Gardner reminds me of a conversation I once had with Starbucks (NasdaqGS:SBUX - News) Chairman Howard Schultz. Like Gardner, Schultz used the word "passion" throughout our entire conversation. But remarkably, the word "coffee" was rarely spoken. You see, for Schultz, coffee is not his passion. Instead, Schultz says, he is passionate about creating a workplace that "treats people with dignity and respect;" a workplace environment that his father never had the opportunity to experience. The coffee product offers the means to help Schultz fulfill his passion. In much the same way, stock trading and commissions offered Gardner the means to fulfill his passion, which was to give his son something he never had -- a father.

Passion is the foundation of effective communication. Dig deep to discover your core purpose, your true passion. Once you connect to it, use it as fuel to build a rapport with your audience -- recruiters, managers, employees, etc. Your presentations, pitches, speeches, and all forms of business communication will be more engaging than ever. Nearly everyone has room to increase what I call the "passion quotient" -- the level of passion you exhibit as a speaker. The higher your passion quotient, the more likely you are to connect with people. Chris Gardner's passion fueled his determination in the face of overwhelming odds and obstacles. Take the time to imagine where harnessing your passion can take you.

刚看完Fight Club这部一直想看而没看完的电影。里头有句这样的名言，“Things You Own End Up Owning You"。我想这句话形容今天的物质社会是最贴切了。人忙碌于工作赚钱，借钱买房子车子，然后负了一生债，继续拼命赚钱还债，过度拼命不开心，换房子换车子，再负更大笔债，是个恶性循环。小弟也是其中的Statistics。

我并不提议像戏里去blow up building的结果，也不像去出家脱俗。但，每天花8小时去上班，重该找出自己的Passion在那里，人生才有意义。

Being a parent now, I always reflect on how I was brought up by my parents and what brought out the best in a child.

Teach
1. By example;
2. By verbal communication;
3. By warning and
4. By disciplinary punishment.

Do not
1. Lure, (诱）
2. Deceive, （骗）
3. Emotional scolding，（骂) and
4. Corporal punishment (打）

Lets discuss in reverse order because I think the do not's are easier to achieve, which will avoid serious damage to the child's mental and emotional health. Sadly, these techniques is pretty common in traditional Chinese family, as the old mentality belittles the intelligence of a child.

Lure and deception is a very bad technique as it imparts dishonesty to the child. Getting the child to cuddle for sweets was something pretty common in those days, and even now. Deception, you are basically teaching them to lie. Its ok to lie. They could lie to you someday. I think of lying like some kinda disease. I must stress the word emotional in scolding here, this means losing your temper. Both scolding and beating instill fear and directly attack the confidence of a child. And if these 4 do not's are repeated in a constant environment, imagine the damage it could do to a child. Simply devastating.

I always recap the phrase, "A child's mind is a blank piece of paper", YOU are the person whose painted it. So, dad's and mom's, don't always whinge my kid is naughty. Reflect on yourself, if you display such qualities, whose the person to blame?

Making the Most of Everyday

It was not until recently that I figured out the essense of this phrase, "Making the Most of It". Everyone has their ambition, some wants to be a doctor, some wants to be an entrepreneuer, may be Bill Gates, may be Warren Buffet.

But not anything you want, you may received. This will come down to your fate, destiny, God's will as the religious will say. When I had just arrived in Australia, there was a huge interest in doing business in China. Very well, I thought. I had a few trips up there with my ex-company in Singapore. I might as well sell my expertise, show the Guai Lo, a thing or two of doing business in China. It took me 3 years to figure out it doesn't work that way. If it is not your destiny, then its just not.

So, I did a few adjustments. Focus on what am I today. I'm a loving father of William, caring husband of Pei Feng, hard-working manager of Macquarie, fellow colleagues of the Company, my parents and so on. Things had become easier, running smoother since.

Every morning I did my chores, washing little William's bottoms, change him. Get ready for work, turn up on time and alert, greet my fellow colleagues, "a Very Good Morning", focus on what I'm suppose to meet everyday, finish on-time (a little late sometimes) daily. Go home to my family, wash up little William after Pei Feng feeds him, change him. Sing lullaby and tuck him in. Eat dinner, wash up dishes and then have an hour for myself.

When I was little, people always thought me, "look to the future", and you will be successful. In my opinion, cherish today, for there will never be another today, but there will always be tomorrow. Make the most of today, and tomorrow will simply be better.

我最近在想，为什么现在的家庭都是两份收入？而以前家庭都只是老爸在工作？其实，现代人都忙碌于工作，没有时间好好享受家庭的幸福，天伦之乐。实在可惜。再说，每个家庭都在工作，开销，间接把物价都炒高了，也不见得比以前的家庭幸福。

人的要求简单一些，生活是不是会幸福一些，有意义一些？

WILLIAM 小时，我常用伊索寓言来哄他睡觉。其中有个是这样说的。

从前，有一只麻雀。他很羡慕孔雀的羽毛漂亮。常常躲起来，偷看孔雀玩耍。有一天，他发觉地上留下许多孔雀羽毛，便用来装饰在自己身上，然后以为自己也可以和他们一起玩耍。可是，孔雀一看就看出他不是真孔雀，把他身上羽毛一根一根啄掉。麻雀很伤心，想要回头跟一班麻雀玩。可是，麻雀们看到这他这幅样子，也不想跟他做朋友了。

Fast and Furious 三部曲

从马来西亚回来时，在飞机上看了速度与激情3， TOKYO DRIFT，觉得蛮好看，最近把之前的一（FAST AND FURIOUS)，二(2FAST, 2 FURIOUS) 也看了。好看的地方，当然就是它的快车与辣妹（也许这名字比较贴切）！尼桑FAIRLANDY 350Z, 尼桑 SILVIA S15, 三凌LANCER EVOLUTION VIII, DODGE VIPER 和 FORD MUSTANG 野马, 还有的就是一群漂亮的日本妹妹。

唯一两个缺点，戏有许多夸张的场面，特技。这还可以接受。不可以接受的是太AMERICAN MUSCLE了。福特野马可在山路上跑赢尼桑FAIRLANDY 350Z！这太过强求了。美国车引擎大，车头长，根本不适合跑歪曲的山路，根本不能飘移。

如果觉得生活沉闷，这部戏可以提提神。

DOING IT QUICK AND DIRTY的意识是草稿估计，和ROUGHLY SPEAKING有同样的意识。比如，人家问，“HOW MUCH WILL THE PROFIT BE THIS YEAR?". 答：“WELL IT SHOULD BE AROUND $500 THOUSAND, JUST DOING IT QUICK AND DIRTY." 这样说也对你的答案做了一个保留，也就是商业上最常用的DISCLAIMER.

Blood Diamond

Just finish watching Leo Di Caprio's new movie, Blood Diamond. I must say he had improved quite a lot in his acting. Although I wasn't fancy about his good looks, I had watched his movies since Romeo and Juliet (1988). Pay attention to the way he speaks South African english.

The story was set on the backdrop of Sierra Leonne in 1990's, where black diamond was being smuggled out of the country into the market. A few things that stands out from this movie. The story was based on real life backdrop and has strong message. The cast was good not for their Hollywood status but thier acting. See Jennnifer Connelly (A Beautiful Mind). The plot was well-written, has a few scenes that is really reflects on what is happening around us today. And I can see the director has a good sense of fliming war scenes, which he also did very well in the Last Samurai.

The only flip side is the strong violence in the movie, but I suppose that is to bring out the real feelings about war.

2007 牛或熊

2007 年将是牛市或者是熊市？前三年股市每年都曾长了将近20%，这走势还会持续吗？一些报道说七字头不是好意头，因1987，1997 都是股灾。

我说2007年熊市可能原因有几个：
1. 伊拉克战争，日前萨达姆的死刑流传在网络上，使这个战争更加紧张，必定会有报复行动。
2. 债务危机，由于经济蓬勃，股市上升，许多投资者提高了债务，进行投机。如果经济萧条，投资者无法应付债务的利息，股市便会下滑。
3. 中国经济，近年的上升不少是因为中国的经济开放。但同时也装出许多坏账和诈骗的消息。如果再次发生如1999年ENRON, WORLDCOM 等类似事件，便会有再次的股灾。

又买股票的朋友多留意。

地产基金，在澳洲称为Listed Property Trust(LPT), 或在外地称为Real Estate Investment Trust(REIT)。这类基金的架构如下：
1. 投资及管理地产如：办公室，工厂或商场。
2. 通常依照基金的条规，都会把所有的引力分息。
3. 挂牌上市。
按一贯列，上市地产基金都必须把盈利分给股东。但近年来许多这类基金与地产发展公司，或基金管理公司合并组成丁制文券（STAPLED SECURITIES），如Westfiled (WDC), 这类基金盈利避一贯地产基金高出许多倍，但同时因投资业务增加，风险也随着增加。

澳大利亚一年有两个最甚大的节日。

ANZAC DAY是澳洲的国庆(虽然澳洲从来没独立过)。它是纪念澳洲和纽西兰(AUSTRALIA AND NEW ZEALAND ARMY CORPORATION)军队在土耳其的GALLIPOLI对抗德国军队的第一世界大战事迹。

11月7号是澳洲人狂欢庆祝赌马的节日，墨尔本杯。地点在维多利亚州墨尔本的FLEMINGTON，而该州就享有公假。这场马在当天的3点开始。

在短短两三分钟内便跑完。结果日本马DELTA BLUE以一倍十五冷门夺取冠军。亚军也被日本马POP ROCK夺走。本来热门的马YEATS，ZIPPING和TAWQEET都跑不了前三名，所以没有一定的赢家(英联的切尔西)。

投资基金的大纲

说到澳大利亚市场上的基金大概可以分成：股票EQUITY，债券BOND，基金FUND ON FUND，地产PROPERTY(REIT)，短期债券CASH FUND。又可分为大户WHOLESALE，小户RETAIL。

基金的运作通常由三方面来操作：投资银行INVESTMENT MANAGER，受托人TRUSTEE和管理人 CUSTODIAN/ADMINISTRATOR。

投资银行负责分析市场，选择股票，投资策略的工作，受托人则负责法律权益的事务，管理人的工作就是定价，处理买卖记录，受益人BENEFICIARY记录，资产记录等。

一贯例，投资银行会向其他银行或高资人士(俗称有钱人)售买新推出的投资基金。售卖成功之后的运作就简单多了。每天随着市场的走势为基金单位从新定价，大众以新价买入或卖出。基金从股票或债券中赚取股息和利息，从买卖中赚取营利，减掉一些开支费用后便可把其余分红给受益人。

好一段时间没写BLOG，有一点对不起读者(其实只有知己)。

澳洲的财政年度是在30JUNE(多数国家都在31DEC，日本是31MAR)，所以之前忙着结帐。我现在在一家美国金融公司上班，STATE STREET(中文名叫道富)。在这里小弟担任一个部门经理，负责为不同的基金(TRUST)准备财政报表。

这里著名的是它峻岭的山崖，面对着无边无际的(我猜是)太平洋。

曾经带我老婆孩子来几次。WATSONS BAY, THE GAP...等。逍遥自在，蛮ENJOY的。

这里的海鲜也不错。著名的有生蚝，有需要的可以来补补(啊良)。
